The Order of Julian of Norwich is a semi-enclosed contemplative monastic community of Episcopalians, living under the traditional vows, in the spirit of Dame Julian of Norwich, the fourteenth-century English anchoress and mystic. The Order revives the medieval practice of including both monks and nuns under the same vows, with equal status in the same order. Founded in 1985 by the Revd John Douglas Swanson, its apostolate is the practice, teaching, and promulgation of classical Christian contemplative prayer, retreats, spiritual direction, study, and writing.
The life of prayer is lived on an axis between the oratory and the personal cell, and includes the four-fold Divine Office of the Book of Common Prayer, daily Eucharist, and the daily practice of personal contemplative prayer. Gregorian chant is normally used for Noonday Office, Evensong and Compline. The formation process takes approximately four years before Solemn Life Vows.
The Order is affiliated with the Conference on Religious Life in the Anglican Communion in the Americas, and is canonically recognized by the Committee on Religious Orders of the House of Bishops of the Episcopal Church in the United States of America. For further information on the Order or its affiliates, address the Guardian.
