ORDER OF ST BENEDICT   OSB

Malling Abbey

Our community was founded in 1891 and became Benedictine in 1906.  The Rule of Saint Benedict provides a structured community life within the enclosure for those whose priority is seeking God.  Our framework is a balanced day with pride of place given to worship and prayer (the Eucharist and seven-fold sung office, personal prayer and lectio divina), work in the house and large gardens and hospitality to our many guests.  Times for recreation, study, literary and artistic work and various crafts complete a full and satisfying day.   A newcomer who wishes to explore her vocation here is welcomed, first for several weeks as an aspirant, then for at least six years of training and discernment before she makes her solemn life vows.  Each novice is encouraged to make her own unique contribution to the common life while also inheriting the community’s traditions.   These include our concern for the well-being of God’s creation, our work for Christian unity and interfaith dialogue, and the cherishing of the legacy of the life, work and remaining medieval buildings of the original Benedictine nuns of Malling Abbey.
